COPMI Support Services
(Children of Parents with Mental Illness)
A decade ago, while working in adult mental health case management, I discovered that parents who struggled with serious mental illness faced unique challenges in terms of not only caregiving, but also communicating about their illness with their children. Some sought out supports for their children, only to be denied services because their children did not meet diagnostic criteria for an emotional or behavioral disorder of their own. In my quest to find supports for the families of the individuals I worked with back then, I discovered that there was a lack of options not just in Hawaii, but throughout most of the United States; while countries such as Australia, the UK, and Norway have extensive programming and support networks available. My dissertation work grew out of this quest and I've attended multiple COPMI International Conferences - presenting in Basel, Switzerland (2016) - participated in collaborative workgroups with international researchers in the area of COPMI supports, and have co-authored COPMI research. However, my real passion is to bring these services to the children in our community...
